rx2600 stopped to boot after patchs

I installed the OpenVMS 8.3-1H1 on my rx2600 Itanium server.

Everything is working well until the installation of the patches bellow:
- VMS831H1I_PCSI-V0100
- VMS831H1I_UPDATE-V0500

The following messages was showed durring the boot process, then the boot process stops.

Loading.: OpenVMS 8.3-1H1 on DKA0: PKA0.0
Starting: OpenVMS 8.3-1H1 on DKA0: PKA0.0

%VMS_LOADER-W-Conout device path cannot be set to multiple devices

%VMS_LOADER-I-Select Console Device Paths from the Boot Manager Menu.

HP OpenVMS Industry Standard 64 Operating System, Version V8.3-1H1

%DECnet-I-LOADED, network base image loaded, version = 05.16.00

%SMP-I-CPUTRN, CPU #1 has joined the active set.

I tryed to stop the CPU #1 (EFI SHELL> CPUCONFIG 1 OFF), but the system still unbootable.

I tryed to configure a minimal boot (EFI SHELL> SET VMS_FLAGS "0,1"), but the boot process is still stopping.

If the VMS831H1I_UPDATE-V0500 patch is uninstalled, the system comes to bootable again.

I tryed to use the VMS831H1I_UPDATE-V0400 patch, but the system can not boot too.

Can anyone have another idea to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Re: rx2600 stopped to boot after patchs

Well, don't install the VMS831H1I_UPDATE-V0500 patch, then. Wait for V6? (If there is a support contract in place here, contact HP.)

Check for disk fragmentation on DKA0:. (This has caused obscure boot-time issues.) DFU or DFO can do this for you (prior to loading the UPDATE kit, if you have either of these installed.

Is the system firmware current? (If not, get there.)

Which console line are you connected to? (And have you gone through the step of selecting the console?)

Did SET VMS_FLAGS "0,1" get you to SYSBOOT? I don't use that sequence with EFI, and I know that some folks have had issues with that based on a recent post. See URLs:

Re: rx2600 stopped to boot after patchs

When you uninstalled the patches, does it still report:

%VMS_LOADER-W-Conout device path cannot be set to multiple devices

?

What console are you using Tcpip/MP? DB25->Serial? DB9?

When I had this problem on my rx2600's, the system did actually boot, but remained silent.
I could get to it over the network once TCPIP was activated.

The fix was to un-set all but 1 con-out and con-err selections in the pre-OpenVMS boot menu

How did you unstinstall the patch without a (console) access? Alternate root? Revert to prior backup (which you should not call un-install IMHO... that's confusing)

Hein.

Re: rx2600 stopped to boot after patchs

Aislan,

first make sure to correct the console input/output/error device settings. See Chapter A.2.2 in the V8.3-1H1 Upgrade and Installation Manual.

Which console are you using (MP, System Serial port) ? Don't use VGA on rx2600.

If the system 'seems to hang', consider to type CTRL-P twice and answer 'Y' to the â Crash? (Y/N)â prompt - if it's being displayed on the console connection you're using. The crash could later tell you, what the system was doing.

You also may try to boot with full console output using (assuming root [SYS0]):

Shell> fsn:\efi\vms\vms_loader.efi -flags 0,30000

Volker.
