system chashes when rmu command issued

On a backup system we are having a strange issue. We are running OpenVMS V7.2 . and RDB V7.0-11. When the command "RMU/show lock/mode = block " is issued from certin accounts , the system crashes.

When the command is issued from my acount there is no issue. Any ideas what the exception points at?

Perhaps different privs or access rights to the database. The version is quite old, I think V7.0.9.0 is current for the V7.0 stream.
Maybe you should have a look into metalink or call oracle.
If you provide more crash data, maybe Volker will look into it :-)

please provide the CLUE file from the crash. It can be found as CLUE$COLLECT:CLUE$node_ddmmyy_hhmm.LIS

Please attach that file to your next reply. With that information, I can tell you much more about the invalid exception crash.

There are many different triggers for invalid exceptions -- access violations or any number of other errors -- that can or that have occurred within the OpenVMS kernel at run-time over the years.

You're going to need to provide at least the CLUE CRASH output here, at a minimum. (And quite probably more information.)

Or you can seek to finesse the crash, and apply the "current" ECOs and/or upgrade. This is almost certainly going to be what HP and/or Oracle would recommend, too.

Rdb 7.0.1.1 is very old, and pre-EV6.

OpenVMS Alpha V7.2 is equally ancient, as well.

You can certainly check process quotas and other context differences, as constrained working sets have been known to cause errors at run-time within buggy kernel-mode code. But barring ECOs, the bug will remain.

Analyzing an OpenVMS system crashdump can be entertaining (and most folks don't usually debug them "for free"), though you'll want to look at what is going to happen here, once the crashdump is analyzed. You're either going to be asked to apply ECO kits for OpenVMS and/or to Rdb (eg: 7.0.8.x), or (more likely) to upgrade OpenVMS and/or Rdb to current. Nobody is going to fix OpenVMS V7.2 nor Rdb 7.0.1.1.

Contact your preferred service provider and/or Oracle for assistance. (But I'd bet that the answer will be "ECO or upgrade"...)

this is a known problem in OpenVMS V7.2 and it is definitely fixed in V7.2-1.

Sorry for the news, but there is no chance to get a fix for V7.2. Engineering has once delivered a new LOCKING.EXE to a V7.2 customer (back in 1999). There is no public patch available for V7.2 containing a new LOCKING.EXE.

The problem happens in conjunction with $GETLKI.

The strange thing is , I can run this command in my account. I am going through
the db protection scheme and account settings . But it seems that a simular account fails and mine doesn't consistantly .

this is an - apparently - intermittent problem in the OpenVMS locking code (related to the SYS$GETLKI system service) and I don't expect you to be able to work around it in any way.

The thing is that I dont think that it is intermittent . I run this command in a procedure that wakes up every 30 seconds from my account with no issue. I have a feeling that there is a priv or prot issues
complicationg things . Thanks for all the responses.
