Then you or your customer needs to talk to HP about acquiring another OpenVMS Alpha media kit.

AFAIK, there are sanctioned and restricted software downloads available, though the customer needs to have an account to use those, or explicit permission of one of the HP groups that runs one of the download servers.

One of the more common ways to gain access to a download is through the software support center and a support contract; that provides access to the download servers, and the support folks are also typically familiar with getting media kits out.

If you work for HP and are thus in a position to more directly assist the customer with a copy of the media, then there are likely other options and paths available to you. But those are best discussed with the folks in OpenVMS Engineering. Or with the support center.

The media kit part numbers are in the Software Product Description (SPD) for the OpenVMS Alpha or OpenVMS I64 V8.3 product, and the SPDs are available via the http://docs.hp.com/ web site.

As a general rule, an inexperienced OpenVMS system manager should not go down the path of downloads; it's a false economy. I've spent many otherwise lovely afternoons troubleshooting well-known and entirely broken Windows CD and DVD recording tools, and the resolving many of the misconceptions around kit and disk formats and recording. And the occasional bad download file or bad CD or DVD blank.) The official CD and DVD media is simply far easier for anyone not specifically experienced with OpenVMS volume formats.

If you're an experienced OpenVMS system manager and if you have experience burning disk images with reliable tools (if you're not using one of the well-known and widely respected and entirely broken recording tools), the ignore this.

A FedEx of physical media just works better; toss it over the wall with the installation manual to your customer, and you're good to go.
