Add a second CPU Unit in my DS20E and DS25 Tru64 Server

Hello from France,
I've got two servers :

DS25 Tru64 5.1.B PK4
and DS20E 5.1.A PK5
I selected all the package when i installed the OS.
Applications: Oracle V9.2.0.4 and Progress V9.1D Databases

I would like to upgrade my servers with a second CPU unit processor.

Question:
Is it only necessary to plug the second Processor and nothing else ?. So the system will identify the second processor and everithing will work fine ?

Or, are there something to do on the system parameters, Updated OS, Updated Bios, buy Unix licence addon ??

So can you give me some information about it ?

Bests Regards

PS: I Know, i must buy a new licence oracle processor

It should simply work, both from firmware and OS perspective. But just in case, before booting, do a 'show config' and 'show cpu_enabled'. The first should show the new CPU, the second should show a mask allowing that cpu to be used. notmally it is set to FF allowing for up to 8 CPUs (which you can not actually plug in of course).

Once booted, check with psrinfo -v

Hein.

I think you'll need to purchase an additional OSF-BASE license, too.

Thank Hein and Mark for response,

For Mark,

Are you sure that i must buy a new license OS BASE
This is the result of lmf list command

Product Status Users: Total Active

OSF-SVR active unlimited
OSF-USR active unlimited
OSF-USR active, multiple unlimited
OSF-BASE active unlimited

Show "multiple" what does it mean ? Multi cpu ?

looks like you are safe on the license part...

BRAGEUL,

I'm not so sure you won't need additional OSF-BASE licenses. When we added CPUs to our 4100s and rebooted users got the message 'Too many users logged on' when they tried to log in. When we added the OSF-BASE licenses that came with the CPUs the message went away.

Our lmf list looks like this:

Product Status Users: Total Active

OSF-DEV active unlimited
OSF-USR active unlimited
OSF-SVR active unlimited
OSF-BASE active unlimited
OSF-BASE active, multiple unlimited

Hi Vic,

Did you received automaticaly the OSF BASE License with your second CPU or did you buy it separately ?

The additional licenses came with the CPUs. We didn't have to buy them separately.

Re: Add a second CPU Unit in my DS20E and DS25 Tru64 Server

Normally DEC/Compaq/HP didn't sell an Alpha CPU without an OS license of whatever type, but if you're dealing with a reseller or a re-furb I wouldn't be so sure.

The "unlimited" in the lmf output refers to unlimited number of users, not unlimited number of CPUs. You need enough license points for a second CPU. See the "number of units" line in the output of "lmf list full for OSF-BASE".
