ES45 5.1B OS replaced ATI RADEON 7500 with 3Dlabs Oxygen VX1

(1) My system is an ES45 running Tru64 OS5.1B
(2) The original video card was the ATI RADEON 7500, but required a 3DLabs Oxygen VX1 for the specific resolution.
(3) Removed the Radeon and inserted the Oxygen card
(4) I used setld -d to remove the RADEON subsets.
(5) modified the /etc/dt/cojnfig/Xservers file to include "screen 1152x900" for the need resolution.
(6) Ran the boot -fi genvmunix -fl s and ran doconfig
(7) After this rebuild, I get "X-server can not be started on display :0"
(8) The messages file shows that the Oxygen Card is installed.

How do I install the Oxygen 3D assoc. product on this ES45?

Some years ago (so I remember nothing), I
went in the other direction on an XP1000. My
notes say only that I did your steps 3
(reversed) and 6, and all was well.

I'd be looking through all the log files I
could find for a more informative complaint.

As usual, actual output might be more helpful
than vague descriptions and interpretations.

I'd probably have waited on that until I had
some default thing which worked.

You may assume that this didn't remove
anything used for the other card, but, again,
it might have been wiser to wait.

And after you built the new kernel, did you
move it to "/vmunix"?

Hmmm. Found more notes.

"sizer -gr"? ("1024x768" seems to have been
the default.)

"sizer -gt"?

What's in "/var/X11/Xserver.conf"?

In response to (4):
I didn't explicitely install any subset for the Oxygen card because it is not part of the Assoc. Products listed for 5.1B. I do have a assoc products for 4.0F that includes the 3D labs subsets. Could this be used?

My problem is that I can mount the cd, but because I dont have a display, my "xhost +" command followed by the "dusetup" does not work. So, I cant get to the cd.

In response to (5): I changed the Xservers back to the original.

In response to (7): Yes, I did move the new kernel to / dir

For the sizer gr command, I do get the 1024x768.

There are no arguments in the Xserver.conf file.

I don't remember needing anything from any
Associated Products discs to get my system to
work with the Oxygen card. (That's not
proof, but I tend to believe me.) Of course,
my card may have been in the system when I
installed Tru64.

Huh? What's "dusetup"? If you don't have a
display, what are you looking at? It's not
immediately obvious to me why, if you "can
mount the cd", you "cant get to the cd". But
if "the cd" is from some old, obsolete
version of Tru64, then this may be a good
thing.

Still wondering.

Re: ES45 5.1B OS replaced ATI RADEON 7500 with 3Dlabs Oxygen VX1

Problem resolved:

I edited the /var/X11/Xserver.conf file from the console:
Added in the "args" the following line:
-pn -bs -su

I rebooted and CDE started!

dusetup is an installation tool provided on the Tru64 UNIX Associated
Products CD├в ROM to install the software.

Thanks to all.

Re: ES45 5.1B OS replaced ATI RADEON 7500 with 3Dlabs Oxygen VX1

Added -pn -bs -su to the args section of the /var/X11/Xserver.conf file fixed the problem.

I was then able to use xhost + and the dusetup command to access the associated products cd to complete my install.
