Ghostscript Help Desperately Needed

I am trying to get a HP DeskJet 940C to work with an AlphaStation XP1000 running Tru64 Unix 5.1B. I have downloaded, built, and installed Ghostscript 8.51. I have configured the system as follows:

Printing a non-postscript file works perfectly.

When I try to print a postscript file, the data light on the printer blinks for about 15 seconds and then the error light blinks. I get the following error in /var/adm/syslog.dated/current/lpr.log:

Alan,

I'll preface this response with a disclaimer: I'm new to both Tru64 and Ghostscript. Bit I figured, since nobody else has come forward with a solution, maybe even some feeble efforts of mine might be useful.

That said, I'm wondering if you've used the hpijs backend with any other inkjet printers and had success with postscript output, or is this the only inkjet printer you've tried so far.

I noticed that LinuxPrinting.org recommends the hpijs backend for the DJ940, but doesn't specifically mention printing postscript to it. On hpinkjet.sourceforge.net, the DJ940 is listed as supported, but the recommended backend is HPLIP (and I don't see any references to configuring HPLIP on Tru64...)

Again, I'm probably showing my ignorance here, and I apologize, but maybe the hpijs doesn't know how to present the rasterized version of the postscript data from ghostscript for use by the DJ940c?

I wonder if the DJ940 can be configured to emulate a simpler inkjet printer, like the DJ850 or 660, for which HP does recommend the hpijs backend...

If I get a chance, I'll try to load Ghostscript and borrow a DJ940 and see if I have any success.

I hope this is at least food for thought.
