Install tru64 V5.1A on DS20E
I want to reinitialize my root device from a vrestore tape.
When i boot from the install CD, I obtain the message : "Error : No Root Device".
With hwmgr -view device I have :
/dev/disk/dsk0c i2o_bs iop-0-tid-515
/dev/disk/dsk1c i2o_bs iop-0-tid-519
I have a SCSI RAID ADAPTEC with to RAIDs.
And i can boot from the disk. So I do not anderstand why the system loaded from the CD does not see the root device.
Thank you in advance for your help

Re: Install tru64 V5.1A on DS20E
> the message : "Error : No Root Device".
Do you get that message when you "boot from
the install CD", or when you run some command
after you have successfully booted from the
install CD?
As usual, this might be easier if you showed
the actual commands you used and the actual
error messages you got when you used them.
> And i can boot from the disk.
And which disk is "the disk"?
When you boot from the CD, do you mount any
file systems? (Should you?)
On which disk/partition were you planning to
restore your root file system?

Re: Install tru64 V5.1A on DS20E
I run No command I just answer 'Y' to the install question.
I can boot from the default disk (dsk0) which corresponds to the RAID1.
Of course, I can not mount any file system when I boot from the CD, because I never get the prompt to enter any command.

Re: Install tru64 V5.1A on DS20E
the CD-ROM, or are you trying to restore
your system disk from a "vdump"/"vrestore"
tape?
I've never done it, but I assume that if you
want to restore from tape, then you don't
need to install Tru64 from the CD-ROM, and
then overwrite everything from the tape.
I know nothing about what is needed to use
your RAID adapter, but it may be that you
need to do a few special things after booting
from the CD-ROM. In any case, if you don't
want to install Tru64 from the CD-ROM, you'll
need to break out of the Tru64 installer, and
get to a normal shell where you can do some
normal work. On my XP1000 workstation, it
appears that after selecting a language,
Mouse-3 (in the root window) provides a menu
which includes the choice, "Shell Window",
which pops up a dtterm, where you can do
anything you might need to do. (If you're
using a serial console, perhaps CTRL/C will
get you out of the installer. ???)
For example, "dn_setup -boot" can be used to
create the device files for a tape drive (and
other things?) which are not made
automatically when booting from the
installation CD-ROM.
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1102238
I know that it works for a tape drive.
Perhaps it will help with your RAID disks,
too. If you know what to do, then you should
be able to do it in that Shell Window. If
you don't know what to do, then you need more
information than I have.
If you can get your disks configured (and, I
assume, mounted) then you may be able to
restore the file systems from your
"vdump"/"vrestore" tape.
Have you looked at the relevant
documentation?

The fellow who wrote that section seems to
know more about this stuff than I do.

Re: Install tru64 V5.1A on DS20E
You must boot server with a little help from NHD CD.
That would be:
>>> boot -flag fa -fi "GENERIC" dqa0
Read the documentation from NHD CD about that.

Re: Install tru64 V5.1A on DS20E
this thing:
http://h30097.www3.hp.com/docs/base_doc/DOCUMENTATION/V51B_HTML/ARH9FETE/BCKPMNTC.HTM#restore-root
or does it end with this tantalizing line for
everyone else, too?
If you used the dump command, restore the directories as follows:
The PDF seems to be more complete:

Re: Install tru64 V5.1A on DS20E
BOMBA, when you boot from disk, you boot kernel that has driver for SCSI RAID controller.
When you boot from installation CD, you do NOT have driver for your RAID controller in kernel.
You have to link it into kernel using modules from NHD 7.
Do you have NHD CD?

Re: Install tru64 V5.1A on DS20E
But now, when i boot from the hard disk, the system can not mount the file systems. For exemple, the disk0b is not found.

Re: Install tru64 V5.1A on DS20E
As per Steven's previous comments it would be useful to see the exact commands you're using to boot, and the exact error messages you're getting...
Having said that what's probably happening is that the device names are different to what they were previously...
How far into the boot process can you get ?
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Rob
