OSF1 V4.0 Alpha 878 + Dead Tape Drive `

All,

We have a DEC3000 running OSF1 V4.0 Alpha 878.. We had an HP Sure Store on SCSI ID 4 hanging off the box, the tape drive went "Tango Uniform". We have an beige DEC "disk pack" with a 5 RZ26 Drives and a DDS drive in it..

Currently the pack top to bottom is
RZ26
RZ26
RZ26
RZ26
TLZ06
RZ26

Would Configuration be the correct SCSI placement for the Tape Drive?
and what will I need to do to have the OS recognize the TLZ06 as the output tape device.
I am not up on DEC OS, these are very old pigs and due for a retirement party beginning the first of the year, but in the mean time I need to get a back up running on this old boat anchor.
What are the pertinent utilities to scan the scsi bus, on HP I use IOSCAN, on linux I use mobprobe. Dec is virtually an unknown substance for me. Any insight appreciated.

If you shut the thing down, connect the SCSI
stuff, and say "show device" at the console
prompt (">>>"), you should be able to see
what's where. (And take appropriate steps,
if things aren't where you wish they were.)

My limited expertise doesn't go back so far
as V4.x, but I'd guess that if you boot the
generic kernel ("boot -file genvmunix") and
perhaps do some "doconfig" things when it
comes up, then it should make some suitable
device files for any new devices.

I don't think that "the output tape device"
is a well-defined concept. If you have
scripts which use specific device names, then
you may need to make some adjustments.

A Google search for all mysterious terms
should find some pages which add more
details. There's probably some actual
documentation somewhere under hp.com, too.

Steven,

this OLD dec stuff is a mystery.. it's been here since before I started working here, no one around here knows anything about.. i am the resident Unix geek, our former mgr was the DEC nerd. He left the company and I inherited his DEC duty .. I will check the config on reboot at 4:00 CST.

"shutdown -h now" (or similar) should take it
down to the SRM console (">>>" prompt). (That
much should look fairly familiar.)

I'd expect that a halt like that (followed by
some console-mode fooling around) would be
more valuable than a simple reboot.

Steve,

Thanks I was able to verify the device ID, we are getting backups now.
