Patchkit 6 for 5.1B

As far as I have heard, to upgrade 5.1B to 5.1B-4, Patchkit 6 is required.
Searching thru the patchlists for 5.1B, I can find nothing with that name.
Under what name can I find and download Patchkit 6?

As far as I undrerstand, this needs "dupatch" which I do not think I have. It is not included in "Patchkit 6", or I do not know where to look.
Where can I get dupatch?

I have asked how to do it over the phone.
The instructions in the instruction documents does not cover the very, very basics, sorry to say.

Did you look at Chapter 3? How very, very
basic does it need to get?

Having only weak psychic powers, I don't know
what you have downloaded, so it's hard to say
exactly what your next step should be.

Re: Patchkit 6 for 5.1B

Sure chapter 3 is basic enough.
But why discuss how to use "dupatch" in chapter 1 when a reader does not know 1) what dupatch is 2) where it is os should be (I don't have it - should it be in my /usr/bin? Is it missing from my installation? Do I need to downloadi it first from somewhere?)
Usually basic stuff should be in the intro, not in the middle.

However, no need to discuss this further, my problem is solved. And I guess you are not the author of the instructions anyway, so why argue?

If you feel strongly about it, why not provide your valuable feedback to HP about the document organization?
Even though there may be no action on it. They may be able to suggest some documentation guide that walks you through what you want to do.

On the site that Steven mentioned is a "Send us your comments" link:

No doubt the uncountably large number of
people devoted to Tru64 maintenance and
development will jump right on it.

Perhaps because Chapter 1 is the "Patch
Process Overview", while chapter 3 is "Patch
Installation and Removal Instructions". I'd
guess that the idea was to begin with an
overview of the patch process, and then move
on to the details of the patch procedure.

In fact, Chapter 1 begins by explaining what
dupatch is, so your complaints about the
documentation seem to me to be largely
unfounded. (Of course, I didn't have any
significant trouble finding the patch kit,
either, although I'll admit that the naming
convention used is approximately
incomprehensible. Of course, that's about as
likely to be changed as is the patch
documentation.)

Re: Patchkit 6 for 5.1B

I can tell you exactly what my problem was.
1) This was the first time I installed tru64 on any machine
2) I had never done tru64 patching of any kind
3) I did not know the structure or packing of a patch distribution
4) On modern machines (Linux, Mac, etc) patching is usually done by untilities already in the system, and the structure of the patch kit is more or less irrelevant to the operator

From my point of view, it would have been useful that in the section "Using dupatch/Invoking dupatch and Installing New Patch Tools"
the line
"After you have made the patch kits available to the system"
would have been changed to
"After you have unpacked the patch tar file and made the patch kits available to the system".
This would have put me on the right track right away.

And I still don't understand the order of the manual.
Why cover the patch process in detail before the steps to get to that point is revealed?

Maybe in my case the expression RTFM should be changed to RTFCompleteM before you start. But again, I am not sure it would have helped.

Could we close this thread now?
