Re: Role of Default users in tru64

the named users will be installed depending on the installed packages (e.g. wnn is wordwide kit, ris = remote installation service, pop/imap are the users for the daemons etc.)

Each daemon runs with different privileges so in case you don't know what you are doing, left them untouched!

Re: Role of Default users in tru64

Hi Vishnu

these uid's are added by the OS, each will be used for different functions by the OS
(lp - printer, ris - remote installation services, cron - scheduled services...)
it's not mandatory to maintain all these, but some are crucial (daemon, bin, adm). Better not to remove any of these.

Hi...

Thanks to u all.I know upto some extent aboout these users.
I want detail information for these users like what file, process these users own, how they help other users like root.

Is there any document available on this matter.

Thanks

Re: Role of Default users in tru64

Vishnu,
All of the default users listed above are created at the time of system installation.

I bet all of these are needed/will be used by the system at appropiate times.

Hence its advisable not to mess with them :)

If you still insist that, you would like to get rid of the default users created by the system, then i would do the following

1. Ascertain what each of the default
account is created for (example daemon
may have something to do with the daemons
on your system and so on).
2. Then you ask yourself the question
"Am i using this feature on my system or
will i ever be using this on my system"

Depending on what you answer you take appropiate action.

If i were you, i wouldn't mess around with them :-) ... remember ...
DON'T FIX IT...IF IT AIN'T BROKEN ... :))

Vishnu,
Take a look at the following link, it may explain some if not all of the user accounts
