Re: es40 server hangs at ata0: acer m....

hi manish
I removed all the drives and tried booting thru cdrom drive...still the same it hangs at the same place..i even wonder what hardware problem,if any it should be ? cos at p00>> prompt all the tests are ok.when disks are connected I see the disks in show device, when I boot from the disk it starts executing from the disk but halts at that place.so scsi controller, hdd seems to be ok, that means the slot is also ok and should be system board.

Re: es40 server hangs at ata0: acer m....

yesterday i was comparing the boot process with another working es40 server. My observation is that after ata0:Acer m1543c the display resolution changes..then goes further with scsi....My guess is the problem could be that this switching of the display mode is not happening and hence the server seems have hanged at that place.. any idea? is my guess correct?

Re: es40 server hangs at ata0: acer m....

probably right....but i am not fully convinced with this...to clear this doubt you can boot server in single user mode if that is the problem it should work.

can you post the booting log or the messages it will be of great help.

when you boot the server using console just copy and send the boot messages.

Re: es40 server hangs at ata0: acer m....

hello Sameeer

We had the same problem faced which is described by you.

Here we are also having a ES-40 server running in Tru64 UNIX. It also stopped booting at
ata0:acer M3154C.

This problem is solved by opening the box did some cleaning work on the borads of ES-40. After the reassembling the server started working.

This problem is due to some loose contact in the borad connections I feel.

Re: es40 server hangs at ata0: acer m....

Hi Sudheer
Today we did the servicing on the server. We did the cleaning on PCI board and the system board. We service everythin including the processor slots, pci slot & memory slots. However we could not remove the pci board from the box.It is so firmly fixed that we feared plugging it out.But after doing the servicing the problem remains the same. Now I am in a situation to guess if it the PCI board that needs the replacement or system board. Could it be the NVram problem?. I have noticed one more thing.. once i set the console to graphics it remain like that until i remove the power cable, once i remove the power cable & put it back this console setting is vanished & when I see SRM version.. at the LCD screen I have to press enter to get to p00>> prompt

ES40 have no 357Mhz CPU.

I suggest you replaced the baterry on PCI board. It is R2032 3V.
