Hi,

have you tried to use ftp to free up some space?

Re: filled root partition, telnet hangs

Usually when the root partition gets filled, there is a small space for root username to login. You should have no problem logging as root username.

Maybe you have a problem with the X login.
Did you try to connect with just a telnet session and logging in as root?
Does the system come up?, do you have a console screen?.
If not, you can connect to the ES40 with a serial connection in the back, and as soon as you connect to it, you should see the system pass its self test and gets you to the P0>>> prompt.

We need more information in order to know what is happening excatly.

Re: filled root partition, telnet hangs

thanks for all the hints.. none worked. we've tried ftp and telnet - both hanged.
We've ended up doing cold reboot and fortunately the machine (with filled root partition) came up.

Re: filled root partition, telnet hangs

So is your problem fixed?
After the cold restart, were you able to establish a telnet connection or ftp to the server?
Were you able to login to the system?
Did you find out what filled up the root partition?
You can post your solution here so others can benefit.

Re: filled root partition, telnet hangs

yes, the system was rebooted and all disks mounted on reboot. cde came up and we've found core file in the root partition.
I'm not sure why CDE locked when the root filled up... probably the problem can be recreated but we don't want to risk this on prod server
