ftpuser and dbdirect users : can these users be deleted?

Hi,

I have two users in my production system: ftpuser and dbdirect.
I need to figure out if these are default users generated by OS during
installation like root, daemon etc. or not.
Moreover, I need to study impact of removing these users from system
since we don't seem to use them directly.

Can anyone provide pointers/info on the same?

Regards,

Praveen

I don't see these on my V5.1B. So, I doubt if these are generated by OS.

Do you run Oracle?. May be it has a role to play here...

Yes, Oracle is the database. However, another user is used for database access, not dbdirect.

These user are not system generated, check /etc/passwd file to view userid of these users, system generated users have uid=0-99,

You do not have to delete these users. Just disable them. Then you will see if everything works OK. In case of some problem you can enable these users again.

Re: ftpuser and dbdirect users : can these users be deleted?

Hi,

check with
find / -user dbdirect -print
what files this user owns.
That may give you a hint what purpose it serves.
Check the ftp log when ftpuser is used or
use last to see when someone logged in with that.
It is certainly better to just disable the users instead of deleting them on a production system. It might be embarrassing if these users were used all the time.
