imapd sessions cause system slowdown

Greetings,

I'm running a tru64 5.1b/sendmail-8.13.6/imap-2004g ds20/3GB RAM email server. The system drags down when there are more than ~200 imapd sessions. The load is less than 1.0 and the swap is fine. The free memory varies from 500MB - 48MB. I see this possibility mentioned in the imap docs however I don't see the related error message. Any ideas?
