login and profile with prefixes of
.mrg...
.new...
.proto...
there is also a
.login
.profile
files in here.
My main query is which files are used in the creation of a new account?

Re: *.profile files in usr/skel - what do they do?
The .login, .profile, and .cshrc are copied to the new account.
The .mrg (Merge file), .new (After Merge), and .proto ( Prototype file before merge) are used for upgrades of the operating system, installupdate process.
Hope that helps,
Dave Bechtold

Re: *.profile files in usr/skel - what do they do?
The .login, .profile,.cshrc,.mgr,.new,.proto are skeleton files, when a new account has been craeted these files are copied into the new account home dir.
The .mrg (Merge file), .new (After Merge), and .proto are used during upgrade of the os(installupdate).
