system failed

hi all,
i have an error message on my system ES40 (Alpha server).

1) CTERM Failed
2) OVER Temp Failure

I need your assistance please.

Hi,

It looks likely that something has overheated within the server, possibly knocking out one of the power supplies.

Is the temperature now within acceptable limits ?

CTERM failed = No CTERM voltage to CPUs.
OverTemp failure = System temperature has passed the high threshold.

to tell you the true, the temperature is not very acceptable. So what are solutions? is it a hardware problem or simply a problem of temperature or cooling?

If the temperature is too high the system won't start up correctly.

You'll need to get that resolved first before trying to work out what else might be wrong...

Do you have a console connected to the server ? That might give you a bit more information to go on...

I'm guessing you're probably using a graphics console.

Try hooking up a serial console to COM1. That might give some more information to go on...

of course i have a graphical console, and the errors messages are :
1) CTERM Failed
2) OVER Temp Failure

where can i check? on the mother board? or the power supply or simply if i change the temperature, the problem will be solve

Both of those are critical errors.

You need to get the temperature down before the system will start up correctly.

The serial console will usually give you more details as to what's happening on the system, as the graphics console doesn't get initialised until fairly late in the Power On Self Test.

Can you get access to the RMC (Remote Management Console) ?

the RMC is not configured

You shouldn't need to configure the RMC - it's integral to the ES40.

This escape sequence should take you there from the serial console.

^[^[ RMC

where ^[ = Ctrl + [

If you can get to the P00>>> prompt on the graphics console, then entering rmc should also work.
