tar: [offset 0]: I/O error

Dear All... First of all Happy New Year 2008 to all the Members of Forum.. I am facing some problem in our daily backup the system is Tru64 V4.0 1229 alpha, recently after repeated failure of backup with following error.
tar: [offset 0]: I/O error
tar: The append option is not valid forspecified device.
after that we changed the tape drive (DDS3)..After that backup run smoothly for 4 days then same error is coming out and backup fails...

Any clue on that...

Thanks in Advance

Hi Mohammad,

have you tried a cleaning tape and new tapes?

As usual, it might be interesting to see the
actual "tar" command you use.

I don't do "tar" backups, so I know nothing,
but what happens in this configuration if the
tape is full? (That would seem to be one
reason for an append operation to fail.)

What happens if you try to read everything on
the tape (repeated "tar t" on a no-rewind
tape device)?

Re: tar: [offset 0]: I/O error

Dear All, After changing the tape drive it was again doing work without any problem but today once again I got the Backup failure with following message

tar: write : I/O error
tar: A write error has occurred.

as the script also take other backup it appaend on the tape but that too has following error:

tar: [offset 0]: I/O error
tar: The append option is not valid forspecified device.

Now my point is that is there any Media Cartridge problem or Tape drive issue still persists. as in the last one month we have changed 2 times the tape drive.
This time i have to sure what is the problem otherwise call will be escalate.

Re: tar: [offset 0]: I/O error

Hi,

Have you also changed the tapes you're using ?

If I remember correctly, DAT tapes maintain a usage record so that they cannot be written to more than a certain number of times...

The "append" error is probably occuring because the tape rewound and/or ejected after the first error.

Cheers,

Rob
