I have a new tru64 ES40,want to install unix 4.0f,
But cannot install successful. Is the new hardware too new ?
Would you help me ?

>>>boot dqa0.0.0.15.0
fatal installation Error
"finder -q" failure file "/tmp/finder.abort" exists
The installation procedure failed or was intentionally exited. To restart the installation, halt and reboot the system or enter: restart
if the X server was started as part of the installation and repeated attempts to restart the installation fail,
enter: restart nogui

I have another ES40(call it old ES40) 18GB's HD,that OS unix 4.0f and already run 3 years.
I try to insert old ES40 HD in new ES40 and boot it,
but show message below:

Re: tru64 es40 install 4.0F question

You do can install 4.0F on ES40 servers.

Have you tried using a serial console? I want to know if you have problems with the GUI installation, or as suggested, use restart nogui when prompted.
Por que hacerlo dificil si es posible hacerlo facil? - Why do it the hard way, when you can do it the easy way?

Re: tru64 es40 install 4.0F question

Welcome to the Tru64 Forum!
Thanks for posting the text attachment.
That's so much more readable.
Not bad for a first time visitor!

Anyway, for a new install I would really suggest to jump right away to 5.1b

The hardware is not too new, but sufficiently different. You may need a new kernel with appropriate (scsi) device drivers

Boot... -f genvmunix -fl s
donconfig ...
ls -l /vmuni*
mv /vmunix /vmunix.old
cp ... /vmunix
Boot

Also... what are all those scsi interfaces?
Are you going to use them all? 1?
I would rip out those which will not be needed, maybe leaving 1 extra 'just in case'.

Good luck!
Hein.

Re: tru64 es40 install 4.0F question

Tru64 installation attempts to save device configuration info from the last installation. This is a problem if the OS revs are different or the hardware has been changed.

In the SRM console, do this:

P00>>> set bootdef_dev

so install won't look at the saved config data.

Re: tru64 es40 install 4.0F question

Hello
First, please post output of
"P00>>> show config"
from both alphas.
As I could see, your SCSI controller is:
1/0Adaptec AIC-7899 pka0.7.0.1.1 SCSI Bus ID 7
and not something like:
NCR 53C895 pka0.7.0.1.0 SCSI Bus ID 7
As I can remember, you can not install V4.0F on adaptec based SCSI controller (but you can V5.1B).
About GUI installation:
remove completely graphic card from alpha server and then try installation again.
In vino veritas, in VMS cluster

Re: tru64 es40 install 4.0F question

Hi,

why use boot dqa0.0.0.15.0?
Why not just boot dqa0?

greetings,

Re: tru64 es40 install 4.0F question

Thanks to everyone. I try a few day. At last,
Change SCSI controller card. It already ok to New ES40 install 4.0f.
I will purchase old's SCSI controller card same as old's ES40.
Two machines motherboard is different. The hard disk bus cable connect is
different, but could connect.
I just change pka0.7.0.1.1 . It already can install 4.0f successful.

The Old's SCSI card is
pka0.7.0.1.0 PKA0 SCSI Bus ID 7 5.57
1 QLogic ISP10x0 pka0.7.0.1.0 SCSI Bus ID 7
dka200.2.0.1.0 IBM-ESXS ST373405LC !#
dka300.3.0.1.0 SEAGATE ST318305LSUN18G
The New's SCSI card is
1/0 Adaptec AIC-7899 pka0.7.0.1.1 SCSI Bus ID 7
dka500.5.0.1.1 COMPAQ BD01864544

May I po Old ES40's show_config?

Re: tru64 es40 install 4.0F question

Evelyn,
for large outputs, put this in a seperate textfile and make this an attachment to the post,
This makes the thread more readable.

and
P00>>>
when switching to serial console you must also attach a workstation with a terminal emulator to the serial line (9 pin connector) of the server.
You can then capture the output from the boot-process.
