tu compatibility with cisco

Hi,

we want to substitute an intel express 510t switch for a cisco catalyst and the performance of the cisco is about 5% of the intel with rcp.

configuration
ds25 ee0 auto(100fd)
ds20e tu0 fix(100fd)
os:5.1b pk3 both

Are there any known problems with the cisco?

thanks,

Michael

Re: tu compatibility with cisco

cisco will not always support the tulip modes, means full duplex may fail and network problem occurs.

But there is no official document with tested equipment so testing is the only chance and if it will not work use another switch.

Btw. speed is not the only criteria, also checks which RFC's are supported by the switch (e.g. packets will be thrown away instead of sending a source quench etc.)

Re: tu compatibility with cisco

Hi Michael,

I have here several Alpha servers with Tulip network adapters connected to Cisco Catalyst 2950 switches .

It is advisable to set the netcard on 100Mbs Full-Duplex (via ifconfig utility) and not let it on "auto" . Otherwise , they get along just fine .

Hi Cosmin,

thanks for your answer.
We have set it to 100 half and that is running ok. Otherwise we have no problems too.

Thanks,

Re: tu compatibility with cisco

Hi Michael,

with cisco catalyst you should configure the ew* interface at >>> level in FastFD mode.

You should configure it also in 100 MBs/FD in /etc/rc.config.d using sysman for 100Mbs and edit the file manually to add speed=200 option for each interface.

Now to prevent any problem you should also configure your cisco switch interfaces directly in FullDuplex mode.

conf t
inter fa0/xx
duplex full
speed 100
exit

Re: tu compatibility with cisco

Auguste,

thanks for your suggestion. That's the procedure how we do it and it still did not work in that instance. I am not sure about the speed=200 however. Some place else it runs without also fine. Maybe I will have the chance to test that in the future.
