tunable parameter

Hello,

Our customer had an ES40 server running Tru64 Unix 5.1 ; the Oracle DBA requested the modification of the tunable parameter "new_wire_method" from the default value 1 to 0.
But i read a notice about this parameter that it is for internal use only and we should not modify it.

Please advise.

Regards

Roger

Re: tunable parameter

There have been several topic addressing this before. Google for:

+new_wire_method +site:itrc.hp.com

Add +hein for the good stuff :-)

Notably check:

http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=761985

And

http://alpha-supernova.dev.filibeto.org/lib/misc/tuning/tuning-tru64-oracle.pdf

Unfortunately I could (quickly) not find an .HP.COM address for that critical document.

Re: tunable parameter

found that document on an HP site one second later...

I googled for its title and it pointed to an interesting page:

google: "Tuning HP Tru64 UNIX V5.1A and V5.1B for Oracle Environments"

Re: tunable parameter

There are certain combinations of Tru64 UNIX version and patch kit, and Oracle version, for which turning off new_wire_method is beneficial and recommended. This is particularly true for older versions of Tru64. If the Oracle DBA recommends turning it off, I would have no hesitation in doing so. Turning it off will not harm anything in the operating system.
