Re: vdump tru64 backups work only if database offline.
¿What is your procedure to backup your database online? Do you put the database in backup mode?

Re: vdump tru64 backups work only if database offline.
If the database is online, then the files will be in use, which is probably why vdump can't access them.
Try looking at clonefset to take a "copy" of the database files that can then be backed up...
Cheers,
Rob

Re: vdump tru64 backups work only if database offline.
These files are not usable for restore.
A good way to do it is what Rob said:
1. Put database in backup mode
2. Create snapshot with "clonefs"
3. Mount cloned file set
4. Put database in transaction mode
5. Do vdump of mounted cloned file set
6. Dismount and delete cloned file set
For doing this way, you must have license for advfs utilities.
If you do not have license for advfs utilities, you must:
1. Shutdown database or put it in backup mode
2. Do vdump backup
3. Start database or put it in transaction mode
If your database is Oracle, you can also use "rman" online backup.

Re: vdump tru64 backups work only if database offline.
By your answer, I can figure out that you are not doing that.
Follow the suggestions above or you will never get a working backup.
