Ideal HP server and spec's to run VMWare Esx4i

Hi,

We are looking to buy a HP new server which will run VMWare Esx4i. I wanted to find out what would be the ideal server and specifications needed.

The server will run 3 to 4 virtual machines, one which one will be a win2K3 domain controller, one will be MS Great Plains, one a light weight machine and the fourth VM will be MS Win2K3 Terminal server.

How much memory should I be doing at? What about the array controller, and Hard drive setup (RAID 5, RAID 1) etc.

Thanks in advance

hi Sanjay,

you can go with HP Proliant DL 380 G5. its good for three to four VM. you should have at least 16 GB(as you are running one DC as well) and RAID 5 setup would be enought.

Hi,

I would absolutely go for a machine withe the Nehalem CPU - All x55xx CPU's.

Depending on the projected load on the VM's you wish to run - buy memory accordingly.

A DL360G6 or DL380G6 would most likely be the best buy.

One important thing is to buy a BBWC module for the array controller.

If you don't need lots of disk space i would choose a RAID 1 setup.

I am successfully running HP's ESXi 4.0 on a DL385 G1, with twin Opteron 280's (revision E6). I also run x64 windows server 2008 as a guest machine on this.
