virtual backup server

Hi all

I would like to know if it is possibile to connect a tape directly to a esx machine.
this is the configuration: two ML370 g5 server, running esx 4.1, sharing a msa storage, configured in HA. Both servers have a scsi ultrium 232 connected, with a u320 scsi controller. I would like to let a win2008 virtual machine use the tape, as in vmware KB1016407. Possible?

thanks

Re: virtual backup server

Hi,

vmware supports tape drives connected through an adaptec controller only, check what type of SCSI controller you have on the server and also is it an standalone tape drive or an library

if it is an library then it will support on ESX 4.x (see Page 20 of the Virtual Machine Backup Guide for further information), if it is an standalone then it is not supported you can refer the same KB: 1016407

"Note:
As of vSphere 4.0, ESX only supports connectivity to parallel SCSI tape libraries."

regards
