_some_ of its components are based on Linux/Open Source, but it is not general operating system and the virtualization layer (VMkernel) is VMware's own work.

Vmware Professional's have a potential of making big money where/while companies are slowly shifting off of older legacy systems.
I don't think HP-UX is going away anytime soon though if that is what you are asking.

Do both, learn as much as you can while you can. ;o)

If you have the opportunity to learn vmware at your current site then push for it. It's a field where there's a lot of development and change at the moment.
