HP 8200 Cdwriter external usb note working

Please help. My cdwriter will no longer read any cd's. When I plug in my system my hp writer hums for a bit with the green light flashing and after a minute or so the orange light just flickers fast and nothing happens. The hardware is recognized by the computer and shows the correct driver and drive letter but it for some reason will not read any cd I put in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would start with a good cleaning. Run a CD cleaning disc through it. The lasers can become dirty and would probably cause a similar effect

My drive is doing the same thing, and it won't even recognize the cd-drive cleaner. It blinks red after a bit. What could have happened? This started occuring very suddenly. Please reply!
