hp740i[firmware type b] does not recognize blank DVD media

I have a hp740i. Using Nero infotool,
it shows no media in the drive whenever
putting blank DVD media in the drive. I
have placed two types of DVD media including
a type it previously recognized, and burned (RiData DVD+R). It recognizes comercial DVD, CD, and blank CD-R media. I will re-install my previous DVD burner(non Dual Layer) tonight to see if I have the same issue(isolate hardware from software), and to retrieve the S/N of the 740i. The drive was purchased on 10/10/2005. There has been no hardware changes to the system since the drive properly functioned.

Try checking if Belarc Advisor or Sandra recognizes your drive. That will tell you if it is hooked up properly.

Also check the device manager in your OS.

Re: hp740i[firmware type b] does not recognize blank DVD media

I have received an RMA, and sent the drive
for repair.

The original post was incorrect, and
misleading. The drive does not recognize
any DVD media: commercial DVD, preburned
DVD, and empty DVD media of any type or
brand. It however works fine with any
type of CD's: commercial, burned CD-R,
and empty CD-Rs.

I had installed the other burner as
the slave on the secondary IDE channel.
The 740i is the master on the secondary IDE
channel.

The other burner sucessfully burns DVDs,
recognizes DVD: commercial and preburned
DVDs.

Well either way, let us know what happens when you get it back. I bought a SOny DVD burner new but it would not copy movies only to find out there was not enough CPU power to handle it. Burns great now that I upgraded the CPU and memory.

I will let you know what happens when
I get a drive back.

However, I did sucessfully burn about a
dozen or so disks before the drive
stopped working over a couple of months.

Re: hp740i[firmware type b] does not recognize blank DVD media

The service department said no fault found.
However, the sent a different S/N of the
same model back. After installing the
replacement drive, this drive works fine with
both DVDs and CDs

Prior to sending the old drive back, I had
uninstalled it, and reinstalled it on a
different IDE cable, and moved it from
being the master to slave without any success
on fixing my problem. The drive would only
recognize CDs and not DVDs.

I have the same problem - drive worked for several months, then started having issues recognizing blank media. Now it will not recognize DVD's of any type - movies, blanks, data discs, etc.

I am under the 1 year mark and will be doing the RMA route as well. Thank you for following through on your issue (and posting) as it has helped me a great deal.

If there is a problem again (and I hope not) be sure you have the latest driver (firmware) update from the manufacturer.
