hp740i[firmware type b] does not recognize blank DVD media
it shows no media in the drive whenever
putting blank DVD media in the drive. I
have placed two types of DVD media including
a type it previously recognized, and burned (RiData DVD+R). It recognizes comercial DVD, CD, and blank CD-R media. I will re-install my previous DVD burner(non Dual Layer) tonight to see if I have the same issue(isolate hardware from software), and to retrieve the S/N of the 740i. The drive was purchased on 10/10/2005. There has been no hardware changes to the system since the drive properly functioned.

Re: hp740i[firmware type b] does not recognize blank DVD media
for repair.
The original post was incorrect, and
misleading. The drive does not recognize
any DVD media: commercial DVD, preburned
DVD, and empty DVD media of any type or
brand. It however works fine with any
type of CD's: commercial, burned CD-R,
and empty CD-Rs.
I had installed the other burner as
the slave on the secondary IDE channel.
The 740i is the master on the secondary IDE
channel.
The other burner sucessfully burns DVDs,
recognizes DVD: commercial and preburned
DVDs.

Re: hp740i[firmware type b] does not recognize blank DVD media
I get a drive back.
However, I did sucessfully burn about a
dozen or so disks before the drive
stopped working over a couple of months.

Re: hp740i[firmware type b] does not recognize blank DVD media
However, the sent a different S/N of the
same model back. After installing the
replacement drive, this drive works fine with
both DVDs and CDs
Prior to sending the old drive back, I had
uninstalled it, and reinstalled it on a
different IDE cable, and moved it from
being the master to slave without any success
on fixing my problem. The drive would only
recognize CDs and not DVDs.

Re: hp740i[firmware type b] does not recognize blank DVD media
I am under the 1 year mark and will be doing the RMA route as well. Thank you for following through on your issue (and posting) as it has helped me a great deal.

Points?
Points are a way to say thank you to the person that has helped you solve your problem.
Only the question author can assign points to a given response. If you submit a question or new topic and another member replies to it, you will see a dropdown menu of points next to the reply (you must be logged in to see the menu). Select the point value and then click the "submit points" button. Note that you can rate multiple replies and submit them at one time. This is helpfull if you wish to give more than 10 points to any one individual.
