Advantages of HP-UX 11i v3 (B.11.31)

Dear Colleagues,

yesterday I received several reply card order forms for Operating Environment media of 11iv3, obviuosly for the HP 9000 product family of servers.
As far as HP hardware is concerned so far we only have been running the PARISC, and no Itanium servers yet.

I checked the boxes on the form for two media sets and returned it to the sender.

Because I can vividly remember how much effort and nerves it had cost me to get 11iv2 installed on a test box with unconvincing outcome, I wonder if it's worth reviving this experience?

So I would like to know if any of you already operate 11.31 systems who maybe could share their experience of it and name a few advantages it might have over 11.11 which we currently run that would possibly justify an upgrade.
Of course I could consult the release notes
and the diff log of patches and newly added features.
But I consider it more authentic hearing from your experience.

Re: Advantages of HP-UX 11i v3 (B.11.31)

I just installed 11.31 on my rx2600 I use as a workstation.

Probably the most significant advantage is - the new mass storage stack.

What does it all mean? Well - when you make SAN changes - you no longer have to care about device files as you now have a persistent DSF(device special file) format for disks with an agile view!

3 of us just spent 12.5 hours last Saturday vgreducing/vgextending and vgexporting/vgimporting and rebuilding 3 clusters because of a SAN FOS upgrade and change - because all the device files changed on our HP systems. If we were running 11.31 - I could have went skiing instead.

What else - well, supposedly there is a 25% performance boost.

Re: Advantages of HP-UX 11i v3 (B.11.31)

Hello Geoff,

the newly introduced Persistent DSF and Agile Views of commands such as ioscan etc.
is really noteworthy.
I can imagine that it greatly could ease the administration of storage that is suffering from frequent attachment changes, especially in clustered environments.
The mapping views of persistent to legacy DSF and HW paths that now become available by additional options in the patched commands is neat and may smooth the transistion.

Hi Ralph,

this OS is made for storage (SAN), very nice docs are here:

A good introduction is the overview document:

it compares 11.23 and the new features in 11.31.

Another useful new command is vgmodify:

Hope this helps!
