Fibre Channel & Switched Fabric/Arbitrated Loop

Does the HP3740A Host Bus Adapter autonegotiate between switched fabric and arbitrated loop. I currently have 4 HBA's that are connected to NAS using Arbitrated loop. I'm planning on adding another 4 HBA's to connect an additional NAS using Switched Fabric. Will the driver autonegotiate between the two (starting with Switched Fabric, then preceed to Arbitrated loop).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Fibre Channel & Switched Fabric/Arbitrated Loop

Sorry, but this card won't do Switched Fabric - you need the A5158A card to do this.

Re: Fibre Channel & Switched Fabric/Arbitrated Loop

To my knowledge, hte A3740A FC card does NOT support Fabric Login.
I would suggest you investigate upgrading to the newer A5158A FC cards, along with a minimum of the 11.03 driver (available from http://www.software.hp.com) as this supports Fabric Login/Switched Fabric.

Re: Fibre Channel & Switched Fabric/Arbitrated Loop

If I add 4 x A5158A FC cards instead of the A3740A FC cards and use the 11.03 driver (in other words keep my existing 4 x A3470A FC cards for my arbitrated loop NAS that is currently in place and add 4 x A5158A FC cards for my switched fabric NAS that I'm adding and use the 11.03 driver) is this a viable configuration or do I have to replace the existing 4 A3470A FC cards with A5158A FC cards so I have the same FC cards?

Re: Fibre Channel & Switched Fabric/Arbitrated Loop

The two types of FC card can co-exist in the same system, but ensure you havete latest drivers and ar epatched up with things like the latest FCMS patches etc.

Re: Fibre Channel & Switched Fabric/Arbitrated Loop

Hi there,

The 3740A is only FC-AL capable. To gain FC-SW support,
you need the A5158A with latest patches. The A5158A
does auto negotiation and configures itself as FC-AL,
Direct Attach or FC-SW device respectively.

So to define a topology, you just configure the port
on the FC Switch in order to be F-Port or FL-Port (with
HP of course QuickLoop/TL-Port). The A5158A will
derive its status from this port connection.

At least this works fine with my environment (N/L/V-
Classes with HP-UX 11.00 September 2000 and the
A5158A cards. Brocade SilkWorms 2800) and I have
a mixed SAN for Private Loop boxes (K-Class) and
fabric capable boxes (L/N/V-Classes).
