Integrity servers: Daily starting up in morning and shutting down in night

Dear Members,
Assalamo Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,

We are using hardware (1*rx7620 + 3*rx4640 + 2*EVA4000) and software (SAP over HP-UX).

We are shutting down our servers and SAN and than starting up back in the morning because of power issues.

We are waiting to get a Generator installed in our organization and will take a month or two to solve and uptill that we will continue to start and stop systems daily.

Our vender disagrees with this and says to shutdown everything until the power problems are solved otherwise he'll void the warranty. Because these servers are not designed to start and stop daily. They are only stopped when some error repair or upgradation is required.

I by myself have never read or listen it that properly shutting down a system damages any hardware or software. Please Advise.

Thans & Regards (Was'Salaam)

Re: Integrity servers: Daily starting up in morning and shutting down in night

HI Abdullah,

Its not recommended to do shutdown everything in night & powerup in the Morning. It's not a pc to do so..

I am not saying it will not work.It should work but its not a good practise.

First of all, the setup should not implement without Proper Power Management like UPS & Generator.

Cheers

Wa-Alaikum Asslaam,

Dear Abu Abdullah,

Itâ s recommended by HP you must have stable power, use UPS, Generator or else redundant sources for power. Its not good practice to start/shutdown Mission Critical machines every day.

Re: Integrity servers: Daily starting up in morning and shutting down in night

Thanks Arun & Asif,

I understand that it should not be done.

We already have UPS's that support the systems up to 30-40 min. but after that time if systems are unattanded, they will be crashed creating more problems. Ganarator will be available in 40-60 days Inshah Allah.

Question is Does it harm the Hardware and/or Software?

Frequent shutdown and startup can affect the EVA. So its not at all advisable to do it daily.

What does the vendor state in writing? Is he bascially telling you that you cannot use the equipmnent until the power is stable? If so, is he assisting in getting the equipment to stabilize the power? Was he aware of the power issue when he sold the equipment to you? If so, is going to give you credit for the time you cannot use the equipment?

All that being said, the powerup cyle is one of the strenuous periods for a piece of equipment, which is why the vendor does not want you to do it on a daily basis. However, and this is a big however, a controlled recycling of the equipment is definitely preferred over the sudden loss of power. The equipmnent should be able to handle a once a day shutdown for a short period of time. But the more you do this, the more likely it is that you will shorten the overall life expectancy of it.

Software - NO
Hardware - Short term NO. Long term - it will shorten life of equipment
