Re: MTBF

Mean Time Between Failure

If there is a significant amount of actuarial data available then it is calculated directly from the number of devices, the number of failures, and the the total operating time. More often, it is an estimate based upon the estimated failure rates of the various components of a system. As for documentation, this figure is generally included as part of the hardware specs of most devices.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: MTBF

MTBF = Mean Time Between Failures

It is normally given in number of hours. You usually see this number referenced with disk drives. This gives you what should be the approximate lifetime of the disk. Some will last longer than the MTBF and some will not last as long. Hence, Mean, or average.

Numbers that I remember seeing at one point are 200,000 MTBF meaning 200,000 hours mean time between failures.

Re: MTBF

A product having a MTBF of X hours does NOT mean you can expect on average X hours of life from the product. It can only be applied to populations. For example, a typical person's mean time between failure (death) is about 9 million hours (or 900 years!) yet most people expect to die a little bit sooner than that!
