Server Set up Suggestion

Hello Guys, I've been planning to set up a
Small server so i can put my small Apparel
business online and at the same time i can get
to host my own personal website and also give
my friends some personal online web space to
host their personal website and other stuff. My
friends brother suggested this type of desktop
server that he says will host my E-business and
web hosting needs he can set this up and all i
have to do is hire a Wed designer to design my
personal website and to develop a website
for my business and buy a license ABYSS Web
server software and sign an Account from
Verisgn, also he said i might want to buy a UPS
back so just incase there's short black out i
can still run my website without interruption.
Here's the Specs that he suggested.

Processor: AMD64 X2 4200 / 939 / 2 GHz hyper
transport

Motherboard: Epox nForce 4 939 supports up to
4GB of RAM/ 4 SATA II / Giga LAN.

Memory: Kingston Hyper-X 4GB (1GB x 2) DDR2
500Mhz

Hard drive: Western Digital 1.6TB (400GB x 4)
16Mb Cache SATA 7200 Rpm

Optical drive: Lite-On DVD-CDRW combo
52x32x52x16 Smart Burn

Floppy: Sony 1.44MB 3.5 floppy dive

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 6000 GT PCI-E 128MB
DDR2 128 bit DVI

Casing: Thermaltake Armor Full tower case with
500 Watt Power supply

I don't know if this is set-up will truly
answer my E-business and Personal web
hosting needs. Guys would you please help me
with this one, And how about buying a small
vertical server and mount it on a small
rack instead? Whats the difference about that
Thermaltake Armor server case and a small
rack mount server? Where would my E-business
and Web hosting needs will fit best in those
2 options? Also How will i back up my data
on raid configured server? is it
complicated?
Any help or suggestions will be highly
appreciated!

Re: Server Set up Suggestion

You did not specified the operating system that you want to use. If you will have 1.6TB (400GB x 4) of data, you will need a small tape device to backup your data, backing that ammount of information to DVD could be a problem.

Also, if you will use 1.6TB (400GB x 4), you won't have any RAID protection. I would suggest a HARDWARE RAID solution with SCSI disks (expensive), or use software raid with that SATA disks, but remember that you will loose at least the capacity of one disk if you do RAID 5.

RAID configuration is simple.
Por que hacerlo dificil si es posible hacerlo facil? - Why do it the hard way, when you can do it the easy way?

Re: Server Set up Suggestion

How small is your business, and how many friends will be using your server? I hope you are very trusting of your friends - it is probably not a great idea to mix business with "fun" unless your business processing is not critical.

All that put aside, unless your small business has thousands of customers and 100+ employees, this system sounds like major overkill (unless you are serving the government and military apparel needs). In order to determine what your true needs are, we will need more details about what your server will need to run. Off-hand, I would guess that you could run on a small rackmount server and you could run MS Small Business Server (everything you should need in one package). If you really want to provide web space to friends, I would suggest a second server.
