Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00 with hardware RAID

There is a requirement for an upgrade of OS on 2 servers (1 R9000/390 + 1 K9000/360x3). They are both currently running 10.20 and will be upgraded to 11.00.

The R Class has hardware RAID5 device attached and 1 internal disk. 3 volume groups exist; 1 on the internal disk and 2 on the RAID. Would I be missing anything if I were to follow the following steps;

1. Backup all data
2. Bring system down and detatch RAID
3. Bring system up and install HPUX 11 on internal disk with partitioning identical to previous install.
4. Create new file systems and restore all data (FS's) as before (except / partition).
5. Attach RAID and cross fingers.

Question is, would the new OS recocgnise the hardware RAID? Or would LVM need to be used to reconfigure all of the volume groups?

I would appreaciate any info on an upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00 and especially regarding this hardware RAID (CMD CRD-5500).

The K Class would be similar but tehre is no RAID involved, only external disk packs. Same process? Any differences/similarities in upgrade process?

Cheers guys

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00 with hardware RAID

Hi,
I'd suggest to backup volume groups' configuration befor installing 11.0 and befor detaching RAID. You have to use vgexport -s -m for vg located on RAID (I assume that the vg on the internal disk is root vg00).
After 11.0 installation import volume groups with vgimport -s -m .map

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00 with hardware RAID

Hi Andy,

I have never used the CMD CRD-5500 array but i would definitely say,

1. Install ignite/UX and do a make_recovery of your existing system.
For more information on ignite/UX, refer to
http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/index.html

2. Did you do anything different on 10.20 to make the OS recognise the CRD-5500.

3. You might want to keep the backup of the map files of the VGs. and after the upgrade you may have to vgimport them later on.
vgexport -p -s -v -m /tmp/vg01.map /dev/vg01
save the vg01.map file
after the upgrade
mkdir /dev/vg01
mknod /dev/vg01/group c 64 0x010000
vgimport -s -v -m /tmp/vg01.map /dev/vg01

4. BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP
Make sure you have a good clean backup of your system.
when you are upgrading one server, You might want to keep a backup of hosts, password, group, crontab, VG mapfiles, rc scripts for applications, application specific files which are on the root disk,
on the other server for easy access.

5. Not sure if you have already checked these out,

Look in the section "Installing and Updating"
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/os/11.0/index.html

good luck with your upgrade

Hi Andy,

Just wanted to add that there are lot of scripts which collect lot of system information, you might find it handy in the future also,

1. nickel
ftp://contrib:9unsupp8@hprc.external.hp.com/sysadmin/inventory/nickel

2. print_manifest
(this command is part of the Ignite/UX software)

3. cfg2html

Hi Andy,

Have a look at this thread. This question is almost the same as yours. He had his solution over there. You may get the solution you are looking for.
