Upgrade or Cold Install from HPUX 11 to 11i

Hi
We are using L2000s and K380s with HPUX11 and need to move to 11i. I have not yet tried the upgrade/install of 11i and would like to know the pros and cons of each method.
Can you guy provide some details about the pros and cons of upgrade and cold install.

Any suggestions are welcome...

HI

Cold install.

But do your preperation beforehand.

Make recovery, backups--- secure files like hosts, passwd, inetd.conf, netconf etc etc.

Also check the forum for further guidance.

Re: Upgrade or Cold Install from HPUX 11 to 11i

I've done both.

Upgrades in a class in Atlanta
Cold installs both in class and here in my shop.

By leaps and bounds, cold installs are easier, and work better. The upgrades all took several tries and eventually on the second day of class, I had to re-ignite my system anyway(cheating!)

Two weeks after cold install on one box, I had an ignite server working and had pushed an image with mirrors to my other two rp5450 servers.

I definitely prefer to cold-install. It gives you the opportunity to fine-tune your file system sizes, cleans out all the old patches that are filling up /var, and gives you a known, clean starting point.

Re: Upgrade or Cold Install from HPUX 11 to 11i

Hi:

In my opinion, you can never go wrong with a well-executed (planned) cold install.

One advantage of cold installation is the opportunity to resize your vg00 filesystems and to eliminate all superseded patches, logs, etc. in one step.

The forming concensus of opinion is that upgrades of 11.0 to 11.11 are generally successful. This was *not* the case in transitioning from 10.20 to 11.x.

For 11.0 to 11.11 (also known as '11i') the choice is really yours to make.

Regards!

Re: Upgrade or Cold Install from HPUX 11 to 11i

No matter which way you decide to go, make sure you develop a detail implementation plan, complete with a checklist and the actual commands to perform the work.

Validate the plan with the first upgrade/install. Update the plan with any changes that occurred during the upgrade/install.

It will make subsequent upgrades/installs much easier.
