6200yl-24G (J8992A) - copper interface speed-duplex 100-full

Hi

a few days ago I replaced our old 6200yl-24G (I think it was firmware K.13....) with a new one with the actual firmware release K.15.10.0009

I am now wondering why i cannot change the speed-duplex-mode of a copper interface.

After typing "interface 4 speed-duplex 100-full" I get " Value 100-full is not applicable to port 4".

The same when I try 10-half, 100-half, 10-full, 100-full, 1000-full, auto-10, auto-100,...

Only "auto" is working. But I need to change it to "100-full" (that was no problem with our old one) to get the connection to our WAN-Router working.

I hope you can help me. Thank you.

Best Regards

Michael N.

Your hardware is not 100/1000, it is 1000. So 100 is not supported.

Re: 6200yl-24G (J8992A) - copper interface speed-duplex 100-full

Which hardware do you mean?

- The gbic transceiver? (-->Which one would be the right one for 100 usage?)

- The switch? (-->It was working with the other J8992A)

Unforunately I do not know what transceiver was used on the 100-ethernet port before replacing the switch...

Re: 6200yl-24G (J8992A) - copper interface speed-duplex 100-full

Thought I found the solution on http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product/sku/3872903

"The J8177C is capable of 100 Mb operation. This is supported on only the HP ProCurve Switch 8200zl, 5400zl, and 6200yl Series using software version K.12.21 or later. Use the "auto-100" port setting to enable 100 Mb operation.Important: The earlier J8177B does not support 100 Mb operation."

But with the J8177C it's also not possible to change it to 100-full.

Re: 6200yl-24G (J8992A) - copper interface speed-duplex 100-full

Bear in mind that "auto" can mean two different things:

auto-negotiate

and

auto-detect.

Different hardware can behave differently.

I assume your WAN interface is manually configured as "100-full".

If you have a J8177C (and firmware K.12.21 or later) then configure the interface for auto-100, patch it in, and then do a show interface brief and see what speed it has decided to adopt.

If it is auto-negotiate AND HP shares with Cisco the unfortunate habit of defaulting to Half-Duplex, then that's not so good.

On the other hand, if HP does auto-detect, OR, does negotiate, but defaults to full-duplex, you will be OK.

Maybe ask your WAN provider why they still stick with the 1990's procedure of not trusting "auto"?

Re: 6200yl-24G (J8992A) - copper interface speed-duplex 100-full

Hi

With HPN devices Auto means just one thing - Autonegotiation.

10, 100 and 1000 Ethernet use different signaling methods. This allows the autonegotiating device detect the link speed when connecting device is set to fixed speed/duplex.

However there is no method for the fixed speed/duplex device to communicate the duplex setting. Therefore the autonegotiating device has no way of knowing which duplex setting should be used - the other end does not negotiate. To allow at least some connectivity between the devices the autonegotiating device will then default to HDx mode (default Ethernet duplex mode, excluding 10G).

This isn't an "unfortunate habit" HP and Cisco share. This behavior is actually defined in IEEE 802.3 standard. As long as the hardware is working according to IEEE standards, it will behave exactly the same way regardless of the manufacturer.

Re: 6200yl-24G (J8992A) - copper interface speed-duplex 100-full

Thank you for this short excursus concerning ieee standards.

@Vince_Whirlwind: It's an older router, perhaps I should replace it to solve the problem...

You also told me to configure "100-full". This would help, but I can not configure this since using the new 6200yl-switch with the new firmware. And there is no possibility to change the settings of the router myself.

@Arimo: Can you also tell me why its not possible anymore to change the interface-mode to "100-full"?
