Can the old SFP MM transceiver be used on new Aruab 2920 switches

We bought a few Aruba 2920 recently to replace the old HP 2920 switchese. (Bought 3 years ago). There is 1G fiber connection on the HP switch and need be migrated over too, so I am thinking if I can re use the old SFP transceiver from existing HP switch onto the Aruaba switch?

Many thanks in advanced

Re: Can the old SFP MM transceiver be used on new Aruab 2920 switches

What you call old HP ProCurve 2920 is, actually, marketed (and rebranded) as an Aruba 2920...for the sake of simplicity basically two things changed: one can be seen at first sight looking at the Switch Hardware (Chassis logo and colors), the other one is evident looking at how operating system evolved and so it is under the hood (what was an "ProVision OS" operating system based HP Switch, is now - once rebranded and further developed - an "ArubaOS-Switch" operating system based Aruba Switch)...this implies that - at present time - owning an HP ProCurve 2920 (loaded) with the latest software ArubaOS-Switch version (or with, at least, the previously released, not more current, WB.16.01.0004 software version) is practically equal to owing an Aruba 2920 with the same operating system software version.

Actually the very latest software branch for WB is 16.04...so go figure how far the development and feature have gone in just few years (months).

Said so...if the SFP Transceiver was working correctly (and was, as I think, really HP genuine) on the HP ProCurve 2920, the same SFP Transceiver will work correctly on the Aruba 2920 or on any HP ProCurve 2920 with latest software version loaded.

Far from being complete, this should be the list of 1G SFP Transceivers supported by HP ProCurve 2920:

  • HP X121 1G SFP LC SX Transceiver (J4858C)
  • HP X121 1G SFP LC LX Transceiver (J4859C)
  • HP X122 1G SFP LC BX-D Transceiver (J9142B)
  • HP X122 1G SFP LC BX-U Transceiver (J9143B)
  • HP X121 1G SFP LC LH Transceiver (J4860C)
  • HP X121 1G SFP RJ45 T Transceiver (J8177C)

This, on the other hand, is the actual list of 1G SFP Transceivers supported by Aruba 2920:

  • HPE X121 1G SFP LC SX Transceiver (J4858C)
  • HPE X121 1G SFP LC LX Transceiver (J4859C)
  • HP X122 1G SFP LC BX-D Transceiver (J9142B)
  • HP X122 1G SFP LC BX-U Transceiver (J9143B)
  • HPE X121 1G SFP LC LH Transceiver (J4860C)
  • HPE X121 1G SFP RJ45 T Transceiver (J8177C)

    Totally identical...isn't it?

Clearly dealing with a fresh new shiny Aruba 2920 Switch (updated with latest available OS software version) equipped with a fresh new shiny 1G SFP Transceiver looks better than reusing old Hardware...but repropousing the used working Hardware shouldn't be a problem in this specific case (apart considering the 0 hours of usage for the fresh new shiny Aruba 2920 versus the non-0 hours usage that the glorious HP ProCurve 2920 has accumulated in just three years of - probably - continous 24x7x365 usage)

Re: Can the old SFP MM transceiver be used on new Aruab 2920 switches

Hi Parnassus,

Thank  you so much for the details information. And the SFP model is: J4858B

I checked online and seems J4858B is older version of J4858C, so it should works.

Many thanks again and have a good day

Shermaine

Yes, old J4858B (your one seems was made during 2007) is supported for all software versions available to HP/Aruba 2920...see here; the point is that it was discontinued in favour of new J4858C, see here (write just J4858 without any suffix letter on the "Enter Search Information" field and select what is listed for details).
