HP 3800 ports trunk LACP vlan tagging question
Hi
Description on problem/question
Servers and other davices that are connected to the hp3800 stack member or switch ports . Servers and devices (including switches) are configured for ports to work on the truncated, trunk, LACP, tagged vlan 802.1q.
An example of a switch stack configuration:
trunk 1/21,2/21 trk21 lacp
trunk 1/22,2/22 trk22 lacp
vlan 222
name "VLAN222"
tagged trk21, trk22
no ip address
Is it possible safely connect these servers and devices using single hp 3800 using only one hp 3800 switch port per server/device with out changing server and devices configuarations.
For exmple confuguring the singe hp 3800 switch as following example:
trunk 1/20 lacp
vlan 222
name "VLAN222"
tagged trk21
no ip address
or
vlan 222
name "VLAN222"
tagged 1/20
no ip address

Re: HP 3800 ports trunk LACP vlan tagging question
Do you want to use only one link of the two that are - currently - part/member of the same aggregated group (trk21 or trk22 for the sake of your example)?
Totally possible...just disconnect the cable you don't want...but this is a "degraded" aggregated group LACP which has temporarily/permanently lost one of its partecipating link.
If you want to move Server from being dual homed to both HP 3800 switches to being single homed to just one HP 3800 switch you should reconfigure switch side (destroying involved LACP aggregated ports) and server side (destroying bonding/teaming) the type of logical links you currently use form LACP logical link to common single physical link freeing one port per aggregated group.
This has nothing to do with usage of command "trunk" (that's Cisco remembrance to say the link can carry multiple VLANs).
In HP ProCurve jargon an access port is untagged of one VLAN, you can then simply tagging other VLANs on the same access port in order to carry them along with untagged (PVID) native VLAN, if necessary.

Re: HP 3800 ports trunk LACP vlan tagging question
I try to explain question
At the moment these server and divices are connected to HP two switch satck with two cables , each server/device is connected one switch. (LACP/tagged vlan 802.1q) My are plan is to use temporarly this one hp 3800 switch with out changing server and devives configurtions. Bacasue the in this hp switch that we are planning to use temporarly 24 ports. Idea is connect only on cable to to this switch with out changing server and devices configurations. After we to return to two HP switch stack configuration and reconnect these server devices to HP switch stack with two cables , where each server/device is connected one switch .
My quistion what wil be valid configurion for this temporary on switch port configuratin tagged vlan 802.1q to connect server and other devices with out chenging thier configurations

Re: HP 3800 ports trunk LACP vlan tagging question
More additional information
We have two hp switheses in stack configurtion and server and devices connected using (link aggregation) LACP/tagged vlan 802.1q.
One hp stand alone switch that we want use temporarly then the hp stacked switch is not available. Idea is connect each server and device with one cable to this standalone switch without changing server and devices configurtion.
If we configuere these standalone switch each port to tagged vlan need fore each server and device is this enough.

Re: HP 3800 ports trunk LACP vlan tagging question
I can only add some extra bits to what I already wrote above to better clarify the scenario I understood you're dealing with: if you have a dual homed Server - so a Server which is concurrently connnected with two of its NIC ports in a bond/team (LACP) to both HP 3800 stacked Switches (let me call them respectively HP 3800-1 and HP 3800-2 for the sake of clarity) - then you can disconnect one of the two links between it and one switch part of the stack (say the one from Server to HP 3800-1 or the one from Server to HP 3800-2, it doesn't really matter which one you disconnect) without causing too much traffic disruption (traffic on the disconnected link will lose some packets but new packets sent will be all necessarily and automatically redirected to the remaining link still in Up state). Clearly this should be temporary (example: you need to do maintenance on one HP 3800).
Said so...following the above scenario, you can also keep all links Up and just shutdown (or remove) the HP 3800-1 or the HP 3800-2...doing so you basically will achive the same result...from the Server point of view.
The most important thing to remember is that if you both peers' ends use LACP for their aggregated ports you must continue to use LACP on both sides...you can't - not even temporarily - have one side with ports not part of a LACP. In other terms: if you do use LACP, you must do it on both side and involved ports must be part of the same physical or logical (in case of Backplane/Frontplane stacking) Switch peer.

Re: HP 3800 ports trunk LACP vlan tagging question
I will try to explain further what aim and quistion is.
At the moment thes dual homed server and other devices are in bond/team LACP configurion and using tagged vlans. 802.1q . These server and other devices and connected to hp 3800 stacked switces (two switces) which ports configured accordingly to team LACP and tagged vlans 802.1q.
I want replace temporaly this hp 3800 stcked siwtch with only one hp 3800 swich . Then this temparly used one hp switch is working the. all hp stacked swithes are all power switced and the are not working.
These dual homed server and other devices will be connected to this tempoarly used HP 3800 switch with only one cable (only with ih one connection) . Idea is not cahenge these server and other divces configurtion when the temparly used switch is working. After short period we replace this one switch with HP 3800 stack by connacting dual homed server and othaer devices as the was before..
My question is in waht configurtion must be used in temporaly used one hp switch side in case then do not want change server and pther devices bond/team confugurtions, Is there enough configure ports with necceasry tagged vlans on must i configure on port team and tagged vlans to this team
