HP Procurve VLAN configuration

Hi all,

I have 2x HP Procurve 2530G switches which I am going to configure with 3 VLANS. The switches are in seperate buildings, so they are connected by 1 cat5e cable.

VLAN 10 - Trunk Ports for wireless access points (Untagged 3-9)

VLAN 20 - Staff (Ports 10-16) (Tagged to 3-9)

VLAN 30 - Students (Ports 17-22) (Tagged to 3-9)

I am using the GUI interface.

What option do I use to link the 2 switches together, so the Vlans are spread across both switches?

Re: HP Procurve VLAN configuration

All VLANs tagged on the port interconnecting the switches.

Apart from configuring a trunk port on both switches. Do you actually have to setup the VLANs on both switches too? or just the one.

Re: HP Procurve VLAN configuration

Yes the VLANs needs to exist on both switches.

Re: HP Procurve VLAN configuration

Ok thanks. Just one other question.

If I had switch A and switch B connected as above.

I then had switch C, which connected back to switch B. I would just need 2 trunk ports on switch B and then 1 trunk port on switch C with the same VLans.

Re: HP Procurve VLAN configuration

GVRP is an excellent solution for this as well.

Re: HP Procurve VLAN configuration

How can GVRP help?

This is the configuration I am going with:

A cable is directly connected from port 2 on switch A to port 2 on switch B

Switch A - HP 2530-24G

Root - ports 2-14 - VLAN10 - Wireless access points connected in.

Staff - ports 15-20 VLAN20 (Tagged to 2-14)

Students - ports 21-24 VLAN30 (Tagged to 2-14)

SwitchB - HP 2520-8G

Root - ports 2-4 - VLAN10 - Wireless access points connected in.

Staff 5-6 VLAN20 (Tagged to 2-4)

Students 7-8 VLAN30 (Tagged to 2-4)

Thoughts?

Re: HP Procurve VLAN configuration

GVRP is used to negotiate which VLANs are tagged on switch-to-switch links.  You set up the tagged/untagged edge ports you want, and GVRP will connect them all up for you.
