smartstart failing with error 76
v 5.5, on ml370
gets to red splashscreen, hangs, reboots, comes back to
'unrecoverable....

I've already swapped out cdrom, as the original one wouldn't even boot from the cd.

The CD is defective. You need to call in to support and request a replacement CD - Spares # 327659-001.

No, I don't think so. I've tried several copies/versions that we have here, tried three different CD drives, two separate sets of SCSI RAID and all come back with the same error.
Tried to install w2k + sp2 and that just hangs at 'installing'

Some people had issues where W2K install would hang if the array controller rom was not current. See if yours needs updating.
