1 mirrored disk to serve as fallback on DL360 G4

Hi,

I have DL360 G4 using Smart Array controller & running Windows Server 2003.

I'm thinking to do the following before doing a major software upgrade:

1) shutdown the server
2) unplug 1 mirrored disk
3) startup the server

* unplugged disk - will serve as my fallbak if ever software upgrade is not successful

* afterwards, plug it back if upgrade is successful.

Any of you have tried this method?

Comments are very much welcome.

Thanks in advance.

It's a common practice if you don't have other choose for backup

Yes, it's possible as SA create hardware mirror...

It it possible but not trustable though...

Anyway make sure you have a backup... nobody knows what could hapen... BTW we at HP don't support that kind of TS so please take all the previous actions.

Re: 1 mirrored disk to serve as fallback on DL360 G4

It really depends on the application(s) running on the server. It is absolutely doable and it works, but for some apps and services (like AD) you do NOT want to reboot with the pulled drive if the system has been "under the knife" for too long.

Agreed to the not supported comment, but have done it in the past in a pinch.

Another thing you can do is place the pulled drive into a "test" server, boot it up and run your updates there. If they work there, it is likely that they will work in the real world.

BTW, how does the synchronization works? disk-to-disk or file-to-file

For the question Supported or not supported

What would be difference between Replace and Upgrade HDD for HW itself?
See attachment

That mind Supported

What is really not supported is pulling drive out while it active
