128MB BBWC for Smart array 6i

Hello,
HP offers an 128MB HP Battery Backed Write Cache
Enabler Kit for the DL3604Gp models.
When do I need this?
Where are the benefits?
Can I improve write speed to SCSI devices? Under what circumstances?

Hi Michelle,

You'll find the Quickspecs for the 6i controller here:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12030_div/12030_div.HTML

As standard the 6i controller has 64MB of cache memory. As this isn't protected by a battery it can only be used for read cache.

Adding the BBWC trebles the available memory for the cache and also enables the write cache, so yes you will see much improved write performance.

Cheers,

Rob
