2nd Processor on DL180G5 Only 4 of 8 Logical Cores in BIOS

New DL180G5. Second processor-- matching speed.

System BIOS recognized 2 of 2 processors, and 8 of 8 logical cores enabled.

Heat Sink was removed, thermal paste removed and reapplied (Shin-Etsu compound per HP), and reseated (processor not disturbed).
Now BIOS shows 2 of 2 processors, and only 4 of 8 logical cores enabled.

For testing purposes, we took another DL180 with 8 of 8 cores enabled. Repeated the steps above, careful with excess thermal compound, evenly spread, and the same results--- BIOS only lists 4 of 8 cores enabled.

System Diagnostics CD test CPUs as fine.

Suggestions on why BIOS is listing only 4/8 cores enabled, how to enable the other cores, and how the heatsink removal and reapplication of paste could impact this.

Re: 2nd Processor on DL180G5 Only 4 of 8 Logical Cores in BIOS

Thought burn-in might improve the situation, but it has not seem to have impacted disabled cores on either server.

It appears that the quad cores are disabled somehow. No settings in BIOS nor Mboard jumpers to affect this that I am aware of.

Anyone else see anything like this?

Re: 2nd Processor on DL180G5 Only 4 of 8 Logical Cores in BIOS

Hi,

What happens if you go into the BIOS Advanced tab and disable the "Core Multiprocessing" and save it, power off then back on and go back in and set it back to Enabled. Does this reset and pick up the cores on the next boot?

Can you try this and update please.

Regards,

Brian

Re: 2nd Processor on DL180G5 Only 4 of 8 Logical Cores in BIOS

Got the fix. Units shipped with a BIOS dated January 2008. On this rev the CPU setting had one choice for multi-threading and this option is grayed out.

Flashed the BIOS to April 2008. Went into the BIOS, CPU settings. Now there are 3-4 options. The one for multi-threading is available, and disabled by default.

Enabled, rebooted eh voila. All 8 cores are being seen. I suspect the unit was running two cores from each CPU.

Nothing about this is in the release notes from HP on this BIOS patch BTW.
