6400R boot error no post notification but serial cable error

When I boot the machine I do not recieve any post errors but do get an error "serial cable error" It will stop and not boot the message just flashes on the screen. I have been able to have it boot up before. Is this something to do with Rom Bios problem? I have not tried to boot from a floppy so am not sure if it will boot off a floppy. Any suggestions.
Thanks

Re: 6400R boot error no post notification but serial cable error

Not clear where you see problem, however here is something to try
It's cache error or you use some serial devices, UPS, Modem .. Other ?

Mark IML all Errors as repaired
Power down server disconnect any additional External Storage Devices !!! Pull out all Hard Drives !!!
Download and Create diskette - run it
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/17918.html

Download and burn CD - run it for all updates
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/22722.html

See if there any post messages for HW problem - if no install all drives back
And boot from diskettes 1 and have #2 ready (don't create 3 and 4)
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/13227.html
Boot and run Update from Hard Disk, verify Boot controller Order for Array controller

Boot system see where is the error - let us know

Re: 6400R boot error no post notification but serial cable error

Is there an error number or anything else? Is something connected to the serial port? This machine uses a standard peripheral board which has the video, serial port, keyboard, and mouse. It's possible serial port B may have some kind of damaged cable.
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: 6400R boot error no post notification but serial cable error

The error flashes on the screen but no error code. This is after the hard drives are started. I have take out the card and checked the connections but they are hard soldered in the board. I have no serial connections connected.

Re: 6400R boot error no post notification but serial cable error

Scott,

This can be caused by the Standby Recovery Server option being set in the BIOS. When enabled, the system checks for a "heartbeat" connection between two servers using the serial cable. If the system deemed as the Master fails, the other system is used to boot the common storage. It's an early method of redundancy.

The Standby Recovery Server Option can be disabled in the BIOS. This should get rid of the error if this is the source of your problem.

I hope this helps,

Brian
