ASR Reboot on Proliant ML370G3

We have a HP Proliant ML370 G3 running Windows 2003/Exchange 2003 that is experiencing regular Automatic Server Recovery (ASR) reboots. The Server Information Agent records the fault simply as:

The server is operational again. The server has previously been shutdown by the Automatic Server Recovery (ASR) feature and has just become operational again. [SNMP TRAP: 6025 in CPQHLTH.MIB].

I have seen a number of threads referring to this fault, but none seem to have a definitive reason for it happening. Anyone experienced this fault or have a fix ?

Re: ASR Reboot on Proliant ML370G3

Hi,

what does it say in the Integrated Management Log of the server? Is there any message before the "ASR detected by System ROM" (e.g. Uncorrectable memory error, Bluescreen)?
There was a ROM Update from September/October 2004 which fixed certain problems with server hangs. You can get it here:

Re: ASR Reboot on Proliant ML370G3

Many thanks for the reply. There's nothing in the Integrated Management Log except the message that ASR has rebooted the server. Also no indications of any problems in the system/app logs. Many thanks for the info on the update, I'll check into that.

hi dave, we had the same problem with 2 ML370G3. no alert in the IML, only the ASR alert. we changed the mainboards and now they are working fine.

Re: ASR Reboot on Proliant ML370G3

That could be true as Hardware or Software related; disabling ASR from System ROM, may gave you chance to capture error.

Re: ASR Reboot on Proliant ML370G3

Thanks for the replies all. We're still working on the issue at the moment. Early in the process HP changed m/board and backplane. We've now updated the BIOS to the 15/9/04 version and giving it some time to see if it seems to have resolved the issue.

One curious thing (coincidence??) is that every server reboot has been outside of core usage hours. Though never at the same sort of time.

Re: ASR Reboot on Proliant ML370G3

I have experienced the same problems for the last year or so. It seems that by updating the BIOS it stops the ASR reboot until the next BIOS update comes out.

Good luck with new hardware, we tried that also and it only worked for so long before we were back to the same ASR problem.

Re: ASR Reboot on Proliant ML370G3

Well, we're just about out of ideas. The server still seems to go down when it feels like it on the latest BIOS and Support Pack. The next stage seems to be to look at hardware support from HP but we don't hold out much hope.

Well, HP changed the motherboard again and this time it seems to have resolved the issue.
