Add a disk to RAID 5 on DL380

Hi,

Got a DL380G5 DataArray P400 Raid 5 with 5 (hot swappable) disks. Want to add another disk to the raid 5 configuration (without losing data). How to do this? Can I just add the additional disk?
Thanks for any help!

Re: Add a disk to RAID 5 on DL380

PLEASE TAKE A VALID DATA BACK UP BEFORE PERFORMING THESE STEPS.

Yes you can add the additional HDD to the existing array.

Go to ACU, Expand the array which you want to add the New HDD to.

You can then create new logical drive on the additional space or you could extend the existing logical drive.

Re: Add a disk to RAID 5 on DL380

hi

remember that for you p400 controller you need to have 512 MB cache to do that procedure or the cache upgrade:

http://urlao.com/p400

Online array expansion (with BBWC upgrade)
Online logical drive extension (with BBWC upgrade)
Online RAID level migration (with BBWC upgrade)
Online strip size migration (with BBWC upgrade)

if you have it no problem go ahead I attached a document which I always recommend to do that procedure

adding 1 or more HDDs to an existing RAID level.

just be sure have the latest firmware for you controller and also the procedure is online you dont need to down the server to do it

PDF -> expand and extend process, check page 4.

- summary you add the new HDD
- after that you have to expand the array
- after that extend the array
- the unallocated space assign it to windows

Didn't your momma teach you to say thanks!

Re: Add a disk to RAID 5 on DL380

Ok, what to do if there's vmware server running (don't have the ACU, etc.)?
What if I backup all virtuals delete the configuration (at boot time) add the disk:
Will it create a new (raid 5) configuration?
Setup vmware server is quite simple, backup and restore the virtual takes time...

Re: Add a disk to RAID 5 on DL380

you could try the offline editon.

Boot from the smart start cd and run ACU.

But make sure the data is backed up !!
