What controller would you suggust then? Can i switch without losing data on the mirrored drives?

uhm ...
using raid created with the embedded sata raid, doesn't allow to you to migrate to a HBA or other controller mantaining your RAID.

make a full back-up ... :-)

install a simple HBA, such as the 1068 SAS/SATA hot plug .
create your array and restore...

take care about the HBA 1068 ... it support only two different array.

the single disk it's viewed like a raid 0...
