Are frequent power up and down hamfull to server?

As an energy saving measure in California, someone came up with the idea to power down the servers at the end of business day and power them back up at the start of the new day. Are these frequent power up and down sequences actually harmful to the server?

Servers are designed for the most part to stay running..in todays business enironment a downed server is lost money BUT downing them isnt harmful per say....it is true that you are MORE likely to have a power supply or backplane board failure in the long run if you are cycling power alot but that isnt guaranteed and this really shouldnt be an issue...keep in mind though that while the monitors take hords of power to keep running, turning them off is a good idea...the servers however dont draw THAT much power off the grid unless of course you have ALOT of them...so if you choose to shutdown the servers at night then that is not a problem
