Array Accelerator battery failure

I have a message that the batteries on the Smart Array 641 Controller have failed. Cane they be replaced or do I have to replace the entire board? If they can be replaced, how do I go about it?

Re: Array Accelerator battery failure

please be sure to upgrade at least to Firmware Version 2.48 (latest 2.68)

This Version includes a fix with several battery charge issue

when this doesn't fix the issue, exchange the cache battery

cheers

Re: Array Accelerator battery failure

Hi Georgia,

You need to replace only the battries. If the cache module is installed, then there will be 2 battries. One on the controller board and one on the cache module. Both the battries are replaceable. Spare part no: 307132-001.

If the server or the controller card is in warranty log a call with HP Support.

Else, buy the spare part. Turn off the server, remove the 641 controller card from the server and then remove the battries.

There will be a metal strip holding the battery to remove the metal strip, at the back of the battery there will be 2-3 latches to release the metal strip. Once the strip is removed, replace it with new one.

Hope this helps.

Raj.

Re: Array Accelerator battery failure

Raj 641 use only one battery
640X use two
see attachment

I guess Firmware it's first what should be done

Re: Array Accelerator battery failure

Hi Oleg,

I do agree that first step is to upgrade the firmware to the latest version.

HP Smart Array 641 Controller Overview:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12067_na/12067_na.HTML

This controller has 64MB BBWC (Battery-Backed Write Cache) by default and has an option of upgrading to additional 128-MB BBWC (Battery-Backed Write Cache) making a total of 192-MB. If optional 128MB cache is used then it will have its own Battery.

You could see it in the image behind the 128-MB add-on chip.

Raj.

Re: Array Accelerator battery failure

so what we missing when we reading?

Modular, easy-to-upgrade design lets you optimize performance as needed with the 64MB and 128MB BBWC Enabler, from 64-MB of memory for RAID and read cache to up to 128-MB of BBWC.

The 64MB BBWC Enabler + 64 onboard makes 128MB BBWC

The 128MB BBWC Enabler + 64 onboard makes 196MB BBWC

so for all memory that stay's on board it act only as READ and added meory 64 or 128 act for BBWC as READ/WRITE

as you notice it say's ENABLER, otherwise it would be called Upgrade only.

There is no BBWC for 64MB onboard memory; it comes only with 64 or 128MB BBWC

I guess that helps
