Backing up Smart Arrays before f/w updates
ALL,
Do you know how to backup the smart array config's before an firmware update? We are supporting our customer remotely and we need to ensure to backup the array card details before a firmware update on this card.
Looking forward for a suggestion on this matter. There are many occurence when a firmware update is done on smart array cards the whole server goes down because the disks can't be contacted :(
thanks a million.
cheers
rajah

Re: Backing up Smart Arrays before f/w updates
Hi Rajah,
the config of a smart array controller is for the disk raid levels (which disks are in which array) and this information is on the individual disks as metadata. If you update the controller and lose disks it is more likely due to the disk firmware no longer being compatible with the new controller firmware. I would suggest you update the disks before the controller or at least check the relavent compatibility matrix.

Re: Backing up Smart Arrays before f/w updates
hi rajah,
completely agree with larry , all the raid config is held on the disks, any incompatibility would be with disk or hba firmware if external msa controller.
