Beggining Prolian Ml350G5... SmartStart... Raid5... first steps

Hi, I have worked with other machines, so it is new for me... before starting...

Help me please...

I start with SmartStar.... could I set up Raid5 on this way ??? (I have five sata disks... one for OS and four for Raid5)

Am I goint to need drivers for the Raid5 or Smartstart will do it work ???

In a "point" of SmartStart, I suppose to insert Windows 2003 Server, isn't it ???

Several more things...

Is there HP videos about set up this machine ????

Once I found HP videos of setting up HP hardware or something like this... where ????

Please, help me....

than you very much....

Re: Beggining Prolian Ml350G5... SmartStart... Raid5... first steps

Hi,

Have a look at the ML350 G5 Documentation here (Spanish Link)

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual〈=es&cc=es&docIndexId=65818&taskId=101&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1121586

Don't configure a single system disk - You have no redundancy when it fails.
Perhaps a better solution is Mirrored Pair (2 disks in RAID1) for Operating System and the others (3 disks) in Raid 5 for Apps/Data.

If all the disks are large capacity you may feel that you are wasting the space on the RAID 1 disks so perhaps buying smaller capacity disks for the O/S mirror using all the large disks as a raid 5.

hi

download Smartstart CD(SSCD) 8.0.

boot from that CD.

you will reach SSCD homepage, in there you will have:
Deploy Server - Maintain Server - View Doc

so you need Maintain Server, Select Array configuration utility, Configure your RAID

go back to SSCD homepage
click on deploy server and continue normal installation

I added some screenshots those are for W"008 but it the same

Re: Beggining Prolian Ml350G5... SmartStart... Raid5... first steps

Hi Brian_Murdoch, you told me the other option I tought, the mirror you comment me is the one I used to make, under Windows 2003 Server Hard Disk Administration or I have to configure it with SmartStart ?????

Because I know if I use the mirror that make Windows 2003 Server Disk Administrator, If the main fails, I have to configure the other manually, wasn't it???

Has the server an HP utility to make the Raid1 mirror for the OS... you told me that works automatically if there is a fail ???? Could I change the disk for this mirror in hot plug too ????

I have five 500 GB HP Sata Disks....

Re: Beggining Prolian Ml350G5... SmartStart... Raid5... first steps

hi

yes if you have RAID 1 and 1 HDD fails you can replace it with another one in a hot plug action

yes you at least need 3 HDD to have a RAID 5, so it is OK 5 HDDs for RAID 5

Re: Beggining Prolian Ml350G5... SmartStart... Raid5... first steps

So, as you told me, Raid1 (two disks) for the operating system; Raid5 (three disks) for datas.

1- Must I make both (Raid1 and Raid5) with SmartStart ????

2- Could I swap all of them in hot in casi falling???

Re: Beggining Prolian Ml350G5... SmartStart... Raid5... first steps

well more details with question 2

RAID 1, if one fails you can replaced.

RAID 5, if one fails you can replaced, only with very bad luck if two fail you need to recreate all again.

Re: Beggining Prolian Ml350G5... SmartStart... Raid5... first steps

hi

As far as I know 2 can use both, can you see both in network connections?

I undertand you can use ilo por only for remote connections or you can do a share ilo port which means have remote connection adn have network working in that port so 2 NIC ports and ilo remote all in 3 ports but that in an option in ilo
