Boot a DL380 G4 from CD os?

I have a mucked up file system on a DL380 G4.  If I boot from the Windows 2003 disk and go into recovery console I can see all the folders off the root, and if I go into the System32 folder I can see all the files there.  If I do DIR in the Windows folder

it  returns a couple file names, then "an error occurred during directory enumeration."  I am afraid of doing a re-install, as it might damage something that might otherwise be salvageable.  The best course of action would seem to be to boot some OS from another media, (CD or USB), and try to copy files after that.

How can I boot this machine and get to the file system to try and recover some of the important files there?

There are Linux distributions that can help you with this.

A quick google found "Trinity Rescue Kit".

You probably need to load extra drivers for the controller.
But if you're lucky the drivers are already on the disc and then you don't :)
